Micro Current Neurofeedback

Micro Current Neurofeedback (or MCN) is a non-invasive (and nonmedicinal) form of treatment that is designed to distrain the brain from such patterns, essentially releasing it from perpetual states of fight, flight, and freeze in order to bring about noted change. By activating the brain’s Parasympathetic Nervous System (the calming system of the brain), the brain is essentially forced to shut down its Sympathetic Nervous System (the activated, heightened, and protective system of the brain.) The FDA has approved and classified MCN as a medical relaxation device, due to its propensity to bring about a calm and more relaxed state of mind. But the true science behind MCN is not just that it is calming the brain, but that is causing that process of Neuroplasticity to occur, thus dis-entraining the brain from past learned patterns of anxiety or depression, for example. MCN allows the brain to relax, which in turn often causes improved sleep. Improved sleep allows the brain to enter into the deepest and most rejuvenating stages, during which time the brain is actually bathed in a spinal fluid which allows for healing to occur. This is not to say that MCN is “healing” the brain, but rather that it is enabling the brain to heal itself via systems that are already in place in our brain but may be paused when we experience chronic stress, anxiety and depression.

Our brains are, in fact, creatures of habit. That is to say, our brains make associations, shortcuts, as it were, as they work to recall information we’ve learned, stimuli we’ve experienced, and the emotional responses we’ve had to them. What many people are unaware of is the fact that when we experience something traumatic, when our brains have responded in a state of fight, flight or freeze, or when we’ve experienced repeated instances in which we’ve responded a particular manner, our brains are learning to continue this pattern of emotional and behavioral response. The more we repeat something the more apt our brains are to continually and consistently respond in that manner over and over. This process, known professionally as Neuroplasticity, is the brain’s ability to make new neural connections when we learn or experience. There are two sides to this, the first being that we can recognize the hope of change, that is the ability to form new connections in the brain and to thus break old habits and create new habits. The other, is recognizing that our brains can, after repeated instances of trauma or repeated and reinforced reactions to particular stimuli, become stuck in patterns of fight, flight, and freeze.

Micro Current NeuroFeedback is FDA-approved for relaxation, making it an effective tool for assisting with anxiety, depression, migraines, and many other areas. Clients who have sought MCN treatments have found relief from a great number of afflictions, however, results are never guaranteed, and we do not view MCN as a cure for these ailments. Instead, MCN is best viewed as a treatment that will allow the brain to become “unstuck” from previously learned patterns of thought and behavior, and lead to a more relaxed response in lieu of those patterns. We believe that MCN paired with counseling is a dynamic and highly effective way to create long-term change, allowing the brain to accept new information with greater ease, and assisting individuals in changing the way they think about and view their struggles.
