What is an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)?
An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is a companion animal that provides comfort and emotional support to an individual with a qualifying mental or emotional health condition. Unlike service animals, ESAs are not required to receive specialized training to perform specific tasks.
For some individuals, the presence of an Emotional Support Animal can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health conditions, allowing them to function more effectively in daily life. When clinically appropriate, an ESA may qualify for certain housing accommodations under applicable laws.
An ESA recommendation is based on a careful clinical evaluation of your mental health needs and whether the animal provides a therapeutic benefit. It is not simply a form or certification, but a professional clinical opinion supported by assessment and documentation.
-
An Emotional Support Animal may be beneficial for individuals whose mental or emotional health condition significantly impacts their daily functioning and whose companion animal provides meaningful therapeutic support. While many people find comfort in their pets, not every pet meets the clinical criteria for an Emotional Support Animal.
An ESA evaluation may be appropriate if:
You have symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD, or another qualifying mental health condition.
Your animal provides comfort or emotional support that helps reduce those symptoms.
You are seeking a professional clinical evaluation to determine whether an ESA recommendation is appropriate.
You need documentation to request a housing accommodation.
If you're unsure whether an Emotional Support Animal is right for you, that's perfectly okay. The purpose of the consultation is to thoughtfully assess your individual circumstances and determine whether an ESA recommendation is clinically appropriate based on your unique needs—not simply your desire to have one.
-
Every ESA evaluation begins with an online intake and informed consent process so you understand exactly what to expect before scheduling your appointment. During your consultation, we'll discuss your mental health history, current symptoms, how your companion animal impacts your emotional well-being, and whether an Emotional Support Animal recommendation is clinically appropriate.
If the evaluation supports an ESA recommendation, I will prepare the appropriate documentation, along with any supporting materials required by my evaluation process. If the evaluation does not support an ESA recommendation, I'll explain my clinical findings and discuss alternative recommendations that may better support your mental health needs.
-
Will I automatically receive an ESA letter?
No. Every recommendation is based on the results of a clinical evaluation. Some individuals qualify for an ESA recommendation, while others may not.Do you accept insurance?
No. ESA evaluations are self-pay consultation services and are not billed through insurance. How long is the evaluation?
Most consultations last approximately 30–45 minutes.Do I have to be an existing counseling client?
No. Individuals may schedule a standalone ESA evaluation without establishing ongoing counseling services. Can you provide documentation for housing?
If the evaluation supports an ESA recommendation, appropriate documentation can be provided for housing accommodations. -
