Perhaps one of the most discussed areas of mental health in our current society is that of anxiety. It is also true that one of the most commonly repeated commands in scripture throughout the Old and New Testaments is the phrase, “Do not be afraid.” Paul even instructs us in the closing of the book of Philippians, “Be anxious about nothing…” (Phil.4: 6). The problem that believers often run into with these verses and truths from scripture is the feeling of guilt and shame. Christians often say to me, “I know that I shouldn’t be anxious, but I am, which means I’m not trusting God. And if I don’t trust God then what does that mean about my walk and my faith?” Rest assured faithful believer, there is hope in the midst of anxiety! In fact, Paul’s writings grant us insight into the kind of truth that doesn’t simply leave us with the command to not be anxious, but the path towards releasing that anxiety to Christ through daily prayer and practice.
